About
I am well beyond the usual age of retirement in most universities. While waiting for a successor, I have the chance to continue teaching the New Testament, that I have always passionately enjoyed analyzing in great depth. I have spent my time mainly here at Dominican University College (DUC) as a regular professor of the Faculty of Theology in Ottawa. However, during all those years, I also served as visiting professor at the Institut de pastorale des Dominicains in Montréal.
I have once again been granted the privilege of teaching as visiting professor at the École biblique de Jérusalem, where I received some of my initial training in exegetics. Since 2014, I have participated in the international research project BEST (La Bible en ses traditions) conducted by the school, through my work on the translation and commenting of three letters in the New Testament, as well as on the response they elicited: the two letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus. I have led more than ten biblical study tours, from Istanbul to Athens, organized in Turkey and Greece every two years by the school’s Faculty of Theology.
All the while, since 1976, I have taught courses alternately on the three main traditions of the New Testament: Paul, the synoptic gospels and John. Circumstances brought me to focus and direct master’s and doctoral theses on what we can describe as the two extremities of New Testament witnessing, i.e. the beginning and the end. On the one hand, we find the more primitive testimonies of the Christian faith, as identified in pre-Pauline forms (hymns, creeds, kerygmas); on the other hand, at the opposite extremity, we study the more recent testimonies, in the corpus of letters (the two letters to Timothy and the letter to Titus), as well as in evangelical witness (the fourth gospel).
Although called upon to fill administrative and management positions several times at DUC, given our institution’s specialized nature and limited size, I have always been able to pursue my teaching, research and publishing activities. In addition, as a Dominican, I have continued my work as preacher by maintaining contact with Church community life.
I devote another part of my time to directing the editorial board for Science et Esprit, a journal specialized in philosophy and theology under the DUC’s responsibility. My areas of interest are expanding as a result. I also sit on the editorial board of the Revue Biblique published by the École biblique et archéologique de Jérusalem.
